Varicose Veins
Varicose Veins, also known as varicosities, are bulging, swollen, “rope-like” veins that appear on the surface of the skin and can be found anywhere between the ankle, leg, and pelvis areas.
Varicose veins are frequently classified into two types: saphenous and non- saphenous. These classifications are based on their particular type of drainage and the particular effects it has on the vein’s branches and trunks.
- Saphenous Varicose Veins
- Non-Saphenous Varicose Veins
Non-saphenous varicose veins are frequently smaller in size than those that are saphenous. Non-saphenous varicose veins commonly drain in a perforator vein that
has become diseased. These diseased perforator veins cause the normal flow of blood in the vein to reverse, causing blood to move toward the surface of the skin at high pressure. It is due to this high pressure that non-saphenous varicose veins occur.
These veins can appear
anywhere but are commonly found on the outer knee, thigh, and lower leg areas. Varicose veins are caused by the failure of blood to circulate properly throughout the body. When these veins malfunction, it can stretch the vein walls, increasing the diameter of the veins and making it difficult for the blood valves to close properly. This inability for the valves to properly close causes blood pooling, enlarging the veins. Over time, more blood can pool into these veins, making them more varicose, sometimes even causing immense pain and discomfort. Varicose Vein Treatment Side Effects
Anesthesia is used during the various procedures, and you should experience no pain throughout the varicose vein treatment. However, after the treatment, it is common to experience some discomfort near the incisions once the anesthesia wears off. The amount of pain experienced before the treatment varies from person to person, but if you carefully follow all post-operative instructions given to you by your doctor, it will help you in a faster recovery.
Current varicose and spider vein treatments have incredibly high success rates. Although it isn’t common, there is a possibility that some varicose and spider veins that were previously treated can reappear. The reappearance of varicose and spider veins can occur if untreated parts of the body are affected by added pressure in the veins. The removal of the defective veins allows the adjacent, healthy veins to freely flow blood back to the heart. However, if these healthy veins have been or become problematic, they can contribute to newly formed varicose and spider veins. Although varicose and spider veins are commonly a cosmetic issue, if you are uncertain whether your varicose and spider veins warrant treatment, it is highly recommended to consult your physician. In severe cases of varicose veins, they can be symptoms of severe health problems involving the circulatory system, and require treatment immediately.
